Why do I need a Flooring Underlayment?

VersaShield® is the type of underlayment product the offers many options.  It is primarily a moisture vapor barrier, but also serves to reduce noise and suppress cracks in certain types of flooring.

How do I determine if my floor has a moisture problem?

If you have a building with a concrete slab that is built “on-grade” or “below grade” you should have an initial concern.  Walk around your property and check for sources of surface moisture (close to a pond, creek, close to where water would gather in rainy periods or an area with a high water table) You can also tape a piece of poly film down for 24 hours and see if moisture gathers under it.  If any of these conditions exist you should do a more thorough assessment before you install flooring.

What should I do if I think I have high moisture?

Have your flooring contractor do moisture vapor emission tests using the ASTM F1869 test method (calcium chloride test) depending on the size of the area you should do one test for every 1000 sq ft but particularly in areas that you suspect may be damp.  Readings should not be more than 3lbs per 1000sq ft/24 hours.  If readings are higher you must do something to reduce this.  It is at this time you must use a vapor barrier such as VersaShield®

What happens if I don’t reduce the moisture vapor emission?

One of the most common causes of failure with flooring products is moisture.  Floors can release from the sub floor, adhesives can emulsify, product can bubble up or peak at seams.

How much does this cost?

An effective vapor barrier will protect your floor that may cost anywhere from $4.00 to $8.00 per sq ft.  Versashield® should be available for approximately .80 per sq ft.

How do I prepare the sub floor?

VersaShield® is comparatively easy to install, the sub floor must be clean, flat and sound.  There is no need to bead blast or grind the sub floor.

If you are installing a new floating floor, there is no need to remove old adhesive. 

How is VersaShield® installed?

VersaShield® is installed with the film side down on the concrete.

VersaTape moisture resistant tape must be used at all seams and around fixtures, pillars etc.

The flooring manufacturers instructions should be followed to complete the proper installation of the flooring product.

Does VersaShield® have a Warranty?

Yes, if you have taken the moisture readings and submitted your Warranty registration information you will qualify for the 10 year Limited Warranty.
