What type of FR approach is used in VersaShield?
VersaShield uses a proprietary coating formulation that works by forming a flame resistant char in the presence of fire. This char prevents ignition of the flammable contents of the mattress or box spring set.
Are any hazardous FR chemicals used in VersaShield?
VersaShield II, VersaShield BP and VersaShield FC are "green" products which utilize no "FR chemicals" in their design. The products are completely user and environmentally friendly. These products have been tested by independent sources to confirm the absence of health risks from toxicity.
What specific FR chemistry is used?
The Elk coating formula is proprietary but utilizes no "FR chemicals" relying instead on the design characteristics of the product to achieve the desired level of open flame protection.
Is FR tape required?
No. Burn testing has shown that special tapes are not required when VersaShield II, VersaShield BP and VersaShield FC are used.
Is FR thread required?
Yes. For extra assurance, we require the use of FR thread in the manufacture of the mattress to protect the seams of the mattress that represent the most vulnerable point to the flame.
How durable is your product?
Mattresses made with VersaShield II were scratched and perforated prior to testing per TB 603. The performance of the VersaShield barrier was not compromised. The barrier has also been subjected to multiple wash cycles without loss of effectiveness.
Will your product be scraped off the substrate during handling or service?
Not under normal conditions. The coating in VersaShield II, VersaShield BP and VersaShield FC are tightly bonded to the substrate requiring extreme effort to dislodge.
